Pearl Care

Caring for your pearls can be easy, allowing for years of enjoyment.

General Care
If you will be wearing make-up or perfumes, apply those first.  Then put on your pearls.  This will help to minimize excess build-up, which can leave the pearls looking dull.

After wearing your pearls, be sure to store them in a place where they will not receive scratches, away from other jewelry.  Wrapping them in a soft linen is a good option.  Additionally, be sure to let your pearls breathe.  In other words, do not lock them in a place that is sealed, cutting off all natural moisture.  Pearls need moisture or they run the risk of cracking.

Cleaning
First, avoid using harsh chemicals.  Instead, wipe your pearls with a damp lint-free cloth.  Then, allow them to dry.  If there is excessive dirt or grime, use a soft soap, e.g. baby soap.  In extreme cases, a professional jeweler can clean pearls, restoring some of the luster.

Restring
It is recommended that pearls be strung once a year, especially if they are worn often.  Be sure that each pearl is individually knotted.  This helps to minimize the pearls from damaging each other, helping to preserve the nacre and surface appearance.
